Reminiscing: What Does Jazz Have in Common with Memorial Day?

So, I'll get straight to the point. Today is International Jazz Day, and it's always celebrated on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. That's one thing the two days have in common, but for me, there's another, much more personal connection; my Dad was a staunch jazz fan, and a retired veteran, so this is an ode to him.

As some of you know, I'm a Daddy's girl. I was a tomboy growing up, and preferred to hang out with my Dad while my sister went shopping with my Mom. He had a way of embracing every part of my somewhat dichotomous personality. All I had to do was ask and he'd sneak me sports gear while my Mom wasn't looking, and even taught me how to throw my first football. In addition, he never missed one of my volleyball, softball, or soccer games, and he attended my track meets with pride.

On the other hand, he embraced my "girly" side just as readily, attending my piano recitals, building me a custom doll house, and secretly measuring my first keyboard - an Ensoniq - to build a custom stand and storage bench (he was a building contractor who specialized in carpentry).

As for International Jazz day, my Dad instilled in me a love for jazz that will last a lifetime. As a child, I was chatty, and nearly talked him to death when he got home from work. He worked as an insurance agent before breaking away from the long hours of working for others and building his own carpentry business, and he needed privacy and quiet to do bookkeeping for his job.

One day I sneaked into his office while he listened to soft jazz playing in the background and worked on his books. He looked up and offered me the usual endearment, "Hey, Suga." As soon as I started my prattling about whatever little girls chatter about, he put his forefinger to his lips and "shushed" me.

"Suga, if you're gonna stay in here and keep Daddy company you're gonna have to learn to listen."

He nodded toward the record player as the 33-1/2 continued to spin around slowly, and I listened. From that day on, I joined him in his office and we listened to jazz together - Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Chuck Mangioni, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Billie Holiday, just to name a few, and as I said before, there began my love for jazz and my introduction to the art and value of listening.

International Jazz day was first implemented by D. Michael Denny, a bandleader in New Orleans (considered to be the birthplace of jazz). The American art form had become internationally known and celebrated for its unique blend of styles and cultures. A combination of complex African rhythms and European style, jazz is known for impromptu jam sessions, and as a musician, I've had the pleasure of participating in a few! For me, jazz offers musical freedom that can't be found in any other genre of music, and because of that, its uncanny ability to continuously evolve will keep it relevant for every age.

There's something to suit every taste, so be sure to sit back with a glass of wine (or whatever sets the stage for relaxation) and listen to some of your favorite jazz today. Thank you is not enough, but to those who gave their lives in service to this country, sacrificing to keep the rest of us safe, thank you.

Zaidi Features: "Kiss the Reaper" by Blak Rayne

New release now available at Amazon!
As a prostitute, Z has no one trustworthy he can rely on in his life until he meets Brody, a kind and mysterious man who seems to be the answer to all his problems.

Kiss the Reaper
By Blak Rayne

‘Wherever depravity knocks, he will answer. Whenever Z knocks, he will kill.’

For Z, prostitution is a way of life, but it’s also become his prison. Desperate to forget his ugly existence, even if it’s only once a week, he confides in a john—a mysterious but kind man named Brody. Every Friday night they talk until the early morning hours. Brody is altruistic, giving him the attention he craves and, in time, they cultivate a unique bond.
For Brody, he’s found something special in Z—an innate charm and pure view of the world—qualities he can appreciate. He’s grown fond of Z and comfortable with their routine, but he knows it will soon come to an end.
Fueled by curiosity, Z follows Brody through the city to a dance club. He wants to learn all he can about his unusual client. However, he discovers more than he bargained for—a dark unsettling secret is hidden in a back room, a secret he can never share.

The elevator slid shut at the far end of the hallway and I caught a glimpse of Brody inside. I raced past it and down three levels of a concrete stairwell to catch him. Once on the street, he walked like he had a purpose, cutting straight through anyone in his path. I followed him for several blocks, where he entered an abandoned warehouse in an industrial park. I kept close to the walls and shadows, careful not to disturb anything.
On the fifth floor, in what had once been a spacious office, sat the basics in furniture—a liquor cabinet and kitchenette, bathroom, and a bed—it wasn’t how I expected him to live. A meticulous man, he seemed the type who would rent a West End condo.
Brody began to remove his clothes, and I ducked behind a rusted filing cabinet. He wasn’t huge or burly, but lean, an unbreakable man, and I felt an even stronger attraction to him. In certain respects we were one in the same—a pair of freakish oddballs—mutually needy. I wanted his attention and it seemed he wanted my approval. But what about love? And what about sex?
His cock was long and lean like him, his nakedness beautiful. My stomach fluttered and I bottled my breath, quickly looking away to stay calm. He deserved privacy and my respect. But my thoughts were far from respectful.
Water ran, and I waited, rubbing nervously at my sweaty upper lip. The bathroom door opened, and Brody emerged in a cloud of steam, waist wrapped in a towel. In minutes, he was dressed and adjusting his tie in front of the large window. Then he slid the holsters over his shoulders, buckled the chest strap, and put on his blazer.
Once again, he was on the move, myself in pursuit. But somehow within a block of the warehouse, his trail had gone cold.
“Shit,” I gasped, my breath misting in the air. Light from a neon sign nearby glistened on the damp pavement. No other business in the immediate area was open. I had a hunch and pulled on the blackened entrance door.
Loud music hit like a brick, rattling my chest. People drank, danced and made out—the club was a den of wickedness. And I soon became disoriented in the chaos, temporarily absorbed like water into a sponge by the hypnotic pulse of lights. I shoved against the suffocating mass of bodies and scanned the sea of bobbing heads. At the rear of the club, I noticed a hallway emitting a red glow and, for some inexplicable reason, I felt drawn to it and moved in that direction.
When I reached it, a man brushed past, bumping my arm. The unnatural light obscured his head and shoulders. I paused and glanced back, but he’d vanished. Our interaction was so brief, only his stature had registered. There were three doors to my left and the middle one stood partly open. I gave it a cautious push and it crept inwards. The red glow from the corridor gradually spread across the floor.
I gagged.
In the center of the room was a dead man, seated on a chair in front of a boarded window, his mouth gaping, a quarter-sized hole in his forehead. He stared with vacant eyes, those deprived of a soul. Blood trickled past the bridge of his nose and had spattered the plywood in the window, like someone had flicked paint from his or her fingertips.
For the first few seconds, I was too traumatized to be scared, but had enough sense to get out of there. Murder was still illegal. Turning on my heels, I blew from the room, heart hammering. I tried to act normal, but failed, wading at an urgent pace across the dance floor, propelling people out of my way. A yard ahead was the silhouette of a tall figure, a man engulfed in the epileptic beat of strobe lights. I don’t know why, but the back of his head and shoulders, and his sturdy purposeful gait seemed all too familiar. He had to be the man who’d passed me minutes before.
He exited the building and I did the same, dashing outside into the drizzly night. Gulping at the cold air, I looked in every direction. The street was desolate, not a human in sight—the man had, yet again, vanished into thin air. I turned east for home, an alley sandwiched between the club and neighboring building, and someone materialized from the shadows.
“W-who are you?” I demanded, limbs shaking.

New Release Spotlight: "The Dirty Hoe" by Shea Balik

"The Dirty Hoe (M/M), Cedar Falls 12"

Author: Shea Balik

Release Date: May 4, 2016

Welcome to Cedar Falls, a small North Carolina town nestled amongst the Smokey Mountains where the people are friendly and the men are hot.

When Vail Sommerlin inherited a house from an estranged uncle in Cedar Falls, he jumped at the chance to move away from his nosy mother, who he loved too much to tell her to butt out of his life.  He just never dreamed that new life would include finding the man of his dreams.

When Lakota White first laid eyes on Vail Sommerlin, he knew he’d found his soulmate.  He was pretty sure his grandmother was laughing her ass off if she was looking down at him right then. Probably even shouting, “I told you so,” over and over again.

Warning: an attempted suicide and a corrupt mayor who is bent on destroying the town once more instigates the zany characters of Cedar Falls to band around the two and help in their own unique way.

Entering the cool interior of the Potter’s Cottage, Lakota headed to where the vegetable seeds were kept. Red hair caught his attention. His heart sped up as the head sporting all that red hair turned in his direction. Wide blue eyes as clear as the summer sky stared at him.

Perfection. It was the only word that came to mind as he took in all that pale skin, small lithe frame and lush lips just made for kissing. So enamored, Lakota hadn’t even realized he’d stopped walking until Jesse plowed into him.

A squeak alerted him that something was wrong. He forced himself to look away from the beauty before him to stare down at the floor where Jesse was sprawled on his ass.

Suddenly the red-haired man was there with another man, this one with brown hair. They were both kneeling next to Jesse. The other man said, “Did you just fall?”

Jesse, one of the most sarcastic men Lakota had ever met, said with utter sincerity, “No, I attacked the floor.”

The stunning redhead asked, “Backward?”

Jesse glared at Lakota, clearly blaming him for this, before answering the beautiful man’s question. “What can I say? I’m freaking talented.”

Laughter like musical bells rose up around them and Lakota was sure he’d never heard a more alluring sound. “Here.” The stunning redhead held out a hand to Jesse. “Let me help you up.”

Once Jesse was once more on his feet, the sexy man Lakota couldn’t stop staring at said, “I’m Vail Sommerlin.” He then pointed to the man next to him. “This is Macon Roxley. We just moved to Cedar Falls.”

“Jesse Grant,” Jesse said. With another pointed glare he waved his hand in Lakota’s direction. “And this oaf is Lakota White.”

Those blue eyes fixed on Lakota once more and he knew he had to have Vail. He couldn’t explain it, but there was something about the redhead that spoke to his soul. Lakota had grown up deeply ingrained in his Cherokee heritage. If there was one thing he knew, it was trust his instincts and right now they were screaming that Vail belonged to him.

Reaching his hand out to shake Vail’s, electricity flowed between them. Vail’s gasp when their skin touched, confirmed he felt it too. That boded well for Lakota. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Not wanting to be rude to Macon, Lakota reluctantly let Vail’s hand go. “It’s nice to meet you, too, Macon.”

“So what brings you to Cedar Falls?” Jesse asked.

As much as Lakota desired to get Vail alone—preferably in a soft bed, naked with his cock buried deep within that taut ass he’d gotten an eyeful of when Vail had bent down to help Jesse—he also wanted to know as much as possible about the handsome man who made his blood sing.

“My Uncle Calhoun left me his house after he died.” Vail shrugged. “So Macon and I have decided to live there.”

Lakota’s fingers curled into fists as he thought of this gorgeous redhead sleeping with Macon. He wasn’t one to try and break anyone up, but he might make an exception in this case.

Jesse’s face, on the other hand, lit up. “Oh? Are you two together?”

Both Vail and Macon looked horrified at the suggestion. Red hair and brown hair shook vehemently. “No,” Macon said at the same time Vail said, “Hell no. He’s my cousin.”

Instantly Lakota’s anger dissipated. But just because Vail wasn’t with Macon didn’t mean he didn’t have a boyfriend. “Are you dating anyone?” His gaze zeroed in on Vail, who shivered a little at the intensity of his stare.

“No. Why? You asking me out?” Apparently Vail wasn’t one who felt the need to beat around the bush. Lakota liked that.

The last thing he wanted to do was play games. It was why he didn’t date very often. He couldn’t stand the way some men felt it necessary to cause drama by not stating what they wanted. “Yes, I am.”

Lakota took a step closer, their bodies not quite touching. “Would you like to go out to dinner with me?”

Those blue eyes danced as Vail looked up at Lakota. “I would love to.”

So engrossed, Lakota completely forgot where they were or that there were others around until Cortney walked up to them and said, “Oh, good, Lakota, you found them.” She gave Vail a smile. “I hope Lakota was able to help.”

Jesse chuckled. “He’s helping all right. Helping himself to a date.”
