Ever since Cali's parents told her she would amount to nothing, she has felt entirely inadequate. Friendless and alone, she takes on the mean girl role in hopes it will make her feel better--and Logan serves as the perfect target. He infuriates her with his obnoxiously long lashes, his all too perfect dimpled smile, and his complete lack of personality outside of his intelligence. It doesn't hurt that he's part of the reason her brother is dead, either. So Cali hates him, and he returns the favor. Thus, their prank-filled, insult-driven rivalry is born, and torturing Logan quickly becomes the highlight of her life. But when Cali's parents set them up on a blind date, she begins to realize Logan might not be as boring as she always thought. He shares her love of poetry, takes a sadistic pleasure in making fun of crepes, and he makes her blush when he calls her smile pretty. And hey, maybe those long lashes of his aren't that obnoxious after all… Two Roads is New Adult Romance about finding love, standing out, and learning to embrace who you are. Her body was mouthwateringly gorgeous, but painfully thin. He walked closer to her, his eyes quickly scanning each injury. She was covered in scratches, cuts, welts, and bruises. They were fully setting in, and he knew they would look much worse before ever looking better. He growled when he saw the fingertip bruises on her throat.

“He choked you?” He enunciated each word, anger making his tone thick and dangerous, even to his own ears. He wasn’t sure why he felt so overwhelmingly protective over her, but something about her made him extremely possessive. It was a foreign emotion, and one he wasn’t quite sure how to handle.

Her slender hand moved up to her throat gently, her painted red nails erotic against the pale skin. “He must have. It all happened so fast. All I know is that I fought hard to get away from him.” Her hazel eyes shut briefly as she inhaled, struggling for control.

She was so damned delicate he couldn’t believe she had walked away from her encounter. Her fragile state reminded him of her mortality, and it angered him. He shoved a hand through his hair in frustration.

“Why in the hell are you so damn thin? Are you sick, or have you been dieting?” He spat the last word out at her, as she pulled the towel free from her hair to comb through the silky strands.

He suspected it was the latter, and he couldn’t understand why women were so obsessed with it. She was so damned beautiful, exuding a raw sexuality that was making the caveman in him roar to life. Desperately he fought the sensual weave she was unconsciously weaving, but it was a battle he was losing fast.

“You look like death, and you’re way too slender. You’re lucky to still be alive.”

She narrowed her eyes at him, as a look of irritation and something unidentifiable flickered across her face. Her arms crossed across her chest before she briefly looked away, her cheeks pink. When she turned back to him, she was completely in control.

“Get laid much, Peter? If that’s your approach, I’m surprised you aren’t a virgin. My weight isn’t any of your business, so butt out. Besides, men love my body.”

He growled, enraged at the thought of another man seeing her. She’d just waved a red flag in front of this bull, and it was a challenge he wouldn’t back down from. When he spoke, his voice was deathly quiet and cold as ice. “Really? Let a lot of them see it, huh?”

She flushed, but didn’t back down. “What’s it to you, one way or another?”

“Nothing,” he responded, his face serious and his voice harsh with lust. “It was nothing to me before tonight. That was before you walked into my bedroom naked, your body begging for this hard shaft between my legs. While you’re in here, you won’t be talking or even thinking about other men. You’ll be too busy thinking about me, feeling me, as I bring that sweet area between your legs pleasure like it has never known before… Or will again.”

Dariel's Feature: So You're Writing a Series? Tips and Pitfalls by Mia Darien

Yesterday, I shared my reviews of two of Mia Darien's "Adelheid Series" books with you. Well, today she's back with me to share a few pointers about series writing...
As I'm here today promoting my paranormal suspense books, the Adelheid series, I've been asked to talk about that: writing a series. As lots of writers today are writing books into series, it's a good topic, I think.

I'll start at the bottom, so to speak. Pitfalls. I think the single biggest issue with writing a series is continuity. You've got to be consistent! If you take breaks in between your books, and we writers have to lest our heads explode, then you're going to lose some details from your memory. We are, after all, only human.

But if you want to develop a following, and that's of course what we're all after, readers are going to notice if you change something. If one character had blue eyes in book one and brown eyes in two, someone is going to notice and point it out. ;)

So it's important to either re-read your stuff, or keep cheat sheets. Personally, I do something in between. I keep story folders that have pertinent history details, and if I can't remember (with certainty) some other detail, I go back into my book and I find if I said it.

Now, my Adelheid stories are short novels, so it's not too hard to go back. If you write epic length tales, seriously consider more cheat sheets! Also have beta readers with good eyes and good memories.
Honestly, if I had one piece of advice for anyone writing a series, it's this. And it's not just about the color of someone's eyes or what year they were born. It's about the character and the stories: be consistent in their growth. What you do them in Story A is going to change them and how they are in Story B, so show that. Make sure that your events flow and make sense between book to book.

If you can do that, make the plots and the characters remain consistent and move forward, then it's going to feel more real to your readers. And even if you're writing left-field fiction, if you can make it *feel* real to your readers, than they'll keep coming back book after book.

One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk Marlowe's life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her with, she's built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she accepts that.

She accepts that she'll never be able to be like "normal" people, even the supernatural ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she's okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the mirror every day, her "okay" life gets turned upside down and she's forced to confront the past she's been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there's already more than one victim, the pressure's on to stop the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

Review
This is book four in Darien's "Adelheid Series," and much like the others I've read, told in first person. Detective Nykk Marlowe is mentioned in the first book in the series, and there's a hint of something unusual about her. Now, in my opinion it takes a gifted writer to keep me interested in anything other than a memoir or autobiography told in first person, but I believe I already mentioned that I've read nearly all of Darien's "Adelheid Series" so far, so...she must be doing something right. LOL

This one started with an intriguing little twist, much like a character portrait. With the exception of a traumatic experience in the heroine's past, her life might seem rather ordinary or even dull at first, but Darien draws us into Det. Nykk Marlowe's life until we almost see through her eyes. We become frustrated with her and even terrified for her.

Darien has a way of making time stand still when she writes. The story is told at a deceptively and calculatingly slow pace in places, and just when the reader starts to settle in and get comfortable, we find we're dealing with something shocking and unexpected. At that point you definitely can't put it down. I really enjoyed Nykk's story and the eerie way the final twist sneaked up on me. I would have preferred a bit more romance in addition to the implied interest, but who knows? Maybe in a future book. An easy four (4****) stars.

Forever is a long time.

The life of a hunter is a lonely one. Perhaps more for Dakota than others in her line of work. Not only is she better than anyone else at chasing down the things that go bump in the night, but her past chases her with the same tenacity.

She's built walls around her solitary existence and that's the way she likes it, but the past never sleeps. When she's hired to hunt an ex-lover for murder, it's just the first in a string of memories that will bring Dakota's past, present and future into a collision course.

And when she agrees to take on a second case and hunt down an Ancient, a vampire over one thousand years old, it unleashes circumstances onto that collision that will shake the foundation of everything she's built and force her, for the first time in a long while, to look to others.

Can she survive it, like she's survived these past four centuries? Or will the weight of it all finally crush her?

Review
Author Mia Darien has woven a fascinating tapestry of characters – mostly supernatural with a few humans thrown in – into a well-written, action-packed thriller perfect for paranormal, fantasy, and action lovers. Reminiscent of the great, gritty detective novels, Dakota tells her story in first person. She’s a shifter, and we meet her as a panther, chasing her quarry. Yes, she’s a contracted bounty hunter sent out to catch the supernatural bad guys, and she can shift into any human or animal form she’s familiar with.
Dakota wins me over when she catches her prey, grumbles about it, then lifts him onto her shoulder to carry back to Darien’s version of a holding cell. Throughout the story, Dakota entertains us with her irreverent, loveable personality with comments like “vampires are creepy-ass-fuckers.” Her co-workers are an interesting menagerie of weres and vamps, and Dakota thinks she’s fine without them when the story opens, but as the action heats up and the plot thickens, if you will, she realizes more and more that their help could be useful and possibly necessary.
Contracted to work on two jobs at once, both personally charged and interrelated, Dakota finds herself drawn to a human officer while hunting an ex-lover thought to be involved in a number of brutal murders. The fact that Dakota’s long lost baby sister is also involved in the murders coupled with unresolved baggage from her past, perpetuates Dakota’s evolution into, let’s say, a better socialized antisocial.
Add an ancient vampire, Amazon warrior women, humans housing Norse Gods, Thor’s hammer, and a giant snake with steel-like scales, and you have an action-packed, yet character-driven read. I didn’t want to miss anything, because new twists kept popping up. Despite the wild characters, Darien managed to keep it believable due to her subtle world-building, and Dakota’s character is so strong that she was always the star. When I had to put it down, I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. Highly recommended 4 ½ stars!

Black Panther Entering the Home Stretch...Writing, That Is

In my defense, I must reiterate that I was extremely ambitious at the onset of 2013. Apparently, the whole "new beginnings" theme and all had me a bit delusional. You remember - the number 13 signifies the beginning of a new cycle? Well, I still believe that but as the year speeds toward the final quarter, it becomes increasingly clear to me that I am running out of time.

My goal was to publish "The Alerians - Dark Progeny: Gideon's Light" and complete "The Alerians - Dark Progeny: Rehobeth's Passion,"  publish "Dark Sentinels Book Three: Parrish," and a couple other WIP's before the end of the year. Well, I ran across a sexy muse starter and got sidetracked. Said sidetrack led right into Kathryn Edgar's original idea of working together on an anthology that eventually evolved into two separate novellas with a unifying theme: "Untameable Heat."

So, here I am at the beginning of August on the heels of my "Untameable Heat: Kaden's Reprieve" release working on a novella for a charity anthology to help save big cats. Where did that come from? you might ask. Well, the wonderful Mia Darien is spearheading the big cat anthology project and I love big cats. 'Nuf said? Off on another tangent I go, but my hopes are still high for releasing "Dark Sentinels Book Three: Parrish" because it's nearly halfway there, and I'm really excited about the big cat anthology (nice to use my writing to help these beautiful creatures). Always shooting for big dreams, I might just make some progress on the severely neglected "Children of Cain."
