Romancing the Hop!

What can I say about romance? Quite a bit, actually, but I’ll spare you most of it. One of my most romantic notions is a man who loves enough to protect his woman from the harshness of life – a shelter. I think of the word “husband” – literally, house band (band around the house). He is first into battle, the protector, provider, willing to sacrifice himself for the woman he loves. Now that’s romantic! The beauty of it is that when that love is reciprocated, his woman wants to protect him, too. The last thing she wants is to lose him in battle or in life, even if he is adamant about protecting her. Ah, but it’s his intent – his willingness that makes me love him. Truth is, it's a partnership in which two people want to look out for each other.

A few years back, prompted by a writing contest, I envisioned a race of beings spawned by Mother Nature Herself, solely to protect the defenseless – endangered animals, the environment. What would they be like? This race of beings would have to be able to walk among man, yet possess qualities and characteristics of majestic animals – rules based on fairness instead of greed and selfishness. Harsh by our standards, yet necessary to maintain order and balance.

My heroes are called “Dark Sentinels.” The blurb for book one is below. The trailer is up and to the right. Book one is available now, and Book two will be released early November, 2012.
Sable, a sentinel wolf shifter, is captured and locked in his wolf form until Akila, a veterinarian, tries to tame him and unleashes a 6'5" baby blue-eyed surprise.
Dr. Akila Marshall is a veterinarian with a calling – save as many stray animals as possible. The only child of wealthy, yet distant parents, she’s convinced that love is not for her. Until…

Sable’s search for his twin sister leads him to Akila. Born into a rare species of wolf shifters whose main purpose is protecting others, he has always been forced to fend for himself, but Akila’s loving, protective nature draws him – and not a moment too soon. Together, they must learn to trust each other enough to overcome a new, deadly enemy.

Book Talk Wednesdays - All Paranormals This Week!

Welcome, L.J. Kentowski, Sky Purington, and Yazmin Subha! I'm thrilled to have you visiting with me today! In Laura's "Guardian of Fate," Cassandra battles good and evil to save souls, Sky's trilogy, "Calum's Curse," weaves tales of magic and an ancient curse, and Yazmin's "Wildfire" tells of a hero seeking to regain his humanity. I won't waste time with chatter. As usual, links are close by, and authors are in alphabetical order. Read on! I'm sure you'll find something you like :-)

Fear of death is all too common. Visions of it chill the bones and skip heartbeats. Seeing it coming and knowing only you can rescue the soul of the victim from the fiery bowels of hell…that’s downright life-altering.

Cassandra Cosgrove’s life was altered at the age of sixteen when she found out that it was her responsibility to save the lives, and ultimately the souls, of innocent victims targeted by Hell’s demons. As impossible as it seemed at first, she was able to live a fairly normal life, while secretly fulfilling her obligation as a Guardian of Fate.

But years later Fate has its own plan when her visions begin drastically changing at the same time two mysterious men appear in her life. Cassandra suddenly finds herself caught in a battle between good and evil, with her own soul on the line. When it seems everyone in her life has a secret they’ve been hiding from her, who can she trust to be the Guardian of her Fate?

Calum's Curse Trilogy
It all began hundreds of years ago when Calum, a young man who had inherited magic, decided he could better provide for his family through the use of dark magic. Eventually, he became overly arrogant and abandoned his coven. Furious with his behavior, they cursed him and sent three creatures of the night out into the world to destroy his descendants. Yet Calum was both powerful and clever. Through the use of time-travel, he built and trapped all three creatures in various New England homes. But as all curses have a tendency to do, this one eventually unravels.
Enter three paranormal investigators...Calum's descendants. Leathan, Devin and Seth never could've imagined what Calum's curse would mean for them. Action-packed, this series will take you on a time-traveling, paranormal romance ride you won't soon forget. He is determined to live again. When his investigative team, The Worldwide Paranormal Society shows up at her door, Alana soon learns that she's in for a wild ride.
Calum's curse visits one more house. Things get hotter and more paranormal than ever before. Love, as always, struggles to overcome the odds. Time is limited though and the creature set to destroy Seth and Alana is the most cunning of all.

Braden has searched all his life for the one who will help him regain his humanity and give him absolute power. One bite and he knew Millie was the one he had been searching for. Millie, a fiery red head is the last one in the line of high born witches who would rather die than give herself to this vampire. After all he killed her mother for her blood as well, didn’t he?  But in a twist of fate Millie learns too late what the truth is. But will death be the only thing that unites them?
Excerpt:
She was slight, her curves meshing against him as though they belonged next to him. She continued to wriggle her lower half trying to get out of his arms. Only the friction awoke the fierce passion residing underneath his skin, and his cock hardened.
"Be still my wild fire, it will be easier." Braden spoke in a low tone directly into her ear. He caught the smell of her hair and could not resist burying his face in the mass of red curls. He groaned with need. Need for blood and need for her.
His voice soothed her anxiety and he felt her stop trying to get out of his arms. Her heart beat slowed down, eventually matching his own. Synchronized again, Braden kissed the back of her head. Enjoying the feel of her silky hair in his face, he bathed in her curls. Moving the curls away from her neck, he bent down, opened his mouth, and sucked the skin on her neck. She tasted of nectar, his very own personal brand.  His head screamed to bite, to taste that rich blood he had sipped last night in the car wash. But the man in him wanted her to be willing, to take her as she reached the height of orgasm as she had nearly done so in the car wash. This time he would be inside her, not just pleasuring her with his hands.
His mind came back to the present as he felt little shakes coming from her, and he realized she was crying.
Her little voice wobbled and she gave a sob, "don't hurt me, please."

My First Book Trailer!

Hi! Finally took the time to create a book trailer! I even composed an original theme song for the "Dark Sentinels" series. Tell me what you think!

How Well Do You Know Your Hero/Heroine? Character Development Framework

Despite nearly universal likenesses and differences, each of us is born with predispositions to think and behave in certain ways according to when we were born, our position or role in our family system, and personal/emotionally charged experiences. Exhibited family values also play a critical role in personality development. Bottom line – personality is extremely complex, and the more complex we allow our characters to be, the more enthralling our story. Our hero and heroine should grow throughout our story. Each one has to learn certain things/lessons to propel the story.

Every character has one thing in common – deep down, they all want love more than anything. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be called romance. At some point, we’ll talk about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, because according to Maslow, everyone – I’ll say that again. Everyone’s main goal is love – to love and be loved. No matter how angelic or evil their actions, the underlying goal is still the same.

Often because of our experiences, we become jaded and seek love in all the wrong ways, and sometimes we learn to seek respect, admiration, even fear in place of love, but that doesn’t change the universal need and desire. So, now that we’ve established the universal ideal, let’s talk a few minutes about individual characters. In addition to love, what does your hero want? What does your heroine want? What lesson(s) must they learn by the end of the story?

Growing up, my nose was always in an astrology book. Arguments abound for and against the merits and accuracy of astrology, but that’s not my intent today. Today, I’d just like to introduce you to a cool personality framework (yep, there’s that word again). Those of us who love lists, also tend to love frameworks J Astrology is great fun for personality studies, and I have a list specifically designed for lovers.

As you read through, think about your characters. Do you recognize them in the brief descriptions? Can you identify which signs they fit into? I like to think of it as determining how your characters express love based on what they already know, and how they recognize it when shown to them once they’ve evolved.

One more thing - Just in case you’re a newbie to astrology, each sign covers a four week period (the last ten days or so of one month, and the first three weeks of the next). Exact dates for the beginning and end of a particular sign’s influence vary slightly according to astrologers and the year of birth. Also, the signs of the zodiac mimic a human lifespan, beginning with Aries, the infant, and culminating with Pisces, the elderly, each successive sign gaining wisdom from previous signs.

1.     Aries – the infant – Life statement (“I am”) – To me, love is innocence. I must learn that love is trust
2.      Taurus – toddler – Life statement (“I have”) – To me, love is patience. I must learn that love is forgiveness
3.      Gemini – elementary years – Life statement (“I think”) – To me, love is awareness. I must learn that love is feeling
4.      Cancer – adolescent – Life statement (“I feel”) – To me, love is devotion. I must learn that love is freedom
5.      Leo – teen – Life statement (“I will”) – To me, love is ecstasy. I must learn that love is humility
6.      Virgo – young adult (20’s) – Life statement (“I analyze”) – To me, love is pure. I must learn that love is fulfillment
7.      Libra – adult (30’s) – Life statement (“I balance”) – To me, love is beauty. I must learn that love is harmony
8.      Scorpio – (40’s) – Life statement (“I desire”) – To me, love is passion. I must learn that love is surrender
9.     Sagittarius – (50’s) – Life statement (“I understand”) – To me, love is honesty. I must learn that love is loyalty
10.                         Capricorn – (60’s) – Life statement (“I consume”) – To me, love is wisdom. I must learn that love is selfless
11.                         Aquarius – (70’s) – Life statement (“I know”) – To me, love is tolerance. I must learn that love is oneness
12.                         Pisces – elderly – Life statement (“I seek”) – To me, love is compassion. I must learn that love is EVERYTHING

How did you do? Were you able to identify your hero and heroine? There are also implications for conflict. Sable, “Dark Sentinels” hero, book one, is a Libra. He’s smooth, extremely well-mannered, appreciates beauty, and seeks harmony. Torin, “Dark Sentinels” work-in-progress hero, book two, on the other hand, is a Scorpio. Volatile, passionate, he’s a control freak afraid to allow himself to be vulnerable. So, how about you? Tell me about your hero and heroine.

Characterization: What Makes You Care About a Character?

The tortured hero? The brilliant villain? What makes you fall in love with a character? What makes you stick with them for 100, 200, 300, even 400 pages with rapt interest? There are quite a few theories about this phenomenon, and my favorite is that there’s something about our favorite characters, even those we love to hate, with which we identify. Sometimes we see parts of ourselves in them. Sometimes we wish we were more like them in some way. Oh, and the action figure above is my hero from "Dark Sentinels" Book Two: Torin DuMont. Right now, he's a work-in-progress.

One of my favorite characters of all time is Hannibal Lecter. No, I’m probably not a murderer, and definitely not a cannibal (ever notice the rhyming thing with the character’s name and one of his major offenses?), but despite major psychosis, let’s face it. The man is brilliant, has great manners, and he’s actually quite likable as long as you treat him with respect and you’re not too afraid to hold a conversation with him.

A common thread for me is intelligence. I don’t care how good-hearted or good-looking a dumb oaf happens to be, I’m probably not going to follow him through an entire novel – maybe for a few minutes, but that’s about it. Stupidity is sad to me, and not entertaining in the least. Ever seen the movie, “The Edge,” starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin? Hopkins is a brilliant, but average-looking millionaire with a beautiful wife, and Baldwin is a tall, handsome lothario who wants that wife for himself. The two are pitted against one another when they get lost in the wilderness. It’s a classic example of brains vs. beauty. Which one did you root for? Which one did I root for? The brain, of course! Great movie, BTW!

Other than intelligence, there are other common threads that most of us are drawn to. I’ve listed a few of my favorites here that we all tend to love (you know me and my lists). Tell me what you think, and feel free to add your own in comments.

1.     Redeemable villains
2.     Stoic heroes
3.     Tortured lovers
4.     Underestimated underdogs
5.     Lost (but not stupid) souls
6.     Emotionally vulnerable warriors
7.     Survivors

Fridays With Friends Guests - A Creative Couple! Meet Authors Chris and Jenny Martucci!

I'm happy to introduce you to multi-published authors, Chris and Jenny Martucci!

Welcome to "Musings of an Independent Artist." I'm excited about being your first interviewer.
1.       What are 3 things you’d like readers to know about you?
Three things we’d like our readers to know about us are first and foremost, we are a team. We are team Martucci! Everything we do, every decision we make is a team effort. Often, our daughters are involved to some extent. Our youngest is four, so you can imagine some of the suggestions and opinions we get! Second, we truly love what we do. The thought of our book offering one person happiness or reprieve from the strains of daily life means we are succeeding. We know what it’s like to be bogged down by day-to-day stresses. We are no different than our readers, and we are readers, as well. Reading offers a break from reality and places people in fanciful settings. We love being able to be on both the giving end of that dynamic as well as the receiving end of it. And last (but certainly not least) we would like our readers to know that we appreciate every sale. If we have sold a book, it means that someone who purchased our first book, which we offer for free, enjoyed it enough to buy the next in the series. That sale signifies we’ve reached one person; one person enjoyed reading our work enough to spend his or her hard-earned money to buy another. We are grateful for our audience.
I’m a die-hard romantic, and it really warms my heart to see a couple working together – especially in a creative endeavor like writing!
2.       Tell us about your books. What can we look forward to from you in the near future? WIPs, upcoming releases    http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Creations-Gabriel-Rising-ebook/dp/B00697UWA6/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1343699757&sr=1-2&keywords=gabriel+rising
Dark Creations: Gabriel Rising, Dark Creations: Resurrection and Dark Creations: The Hunted are all part of the Dark Creations series. The series is a continuing storyline involving Gabriel James, a teenage boy who was genetically engineered and altered to be perfect in every way by a genius geneticist named Dr. Franklin Terzini. Terzini has a vision of transforming humankind, of improving it by eradicating sentiment. He believes emotion to be the root of every evil in society. Gabriel was created devoid of emotions. He is the prototype of sorts for Terzini’s new, improved version of human beings. As the archetype for the new race, Gabriel must integrate into society. He must     attend high school and interact with his peers normally. It is in school where he meets Melissa Martin, a teenage girl who evokes feelings in him; feelings he was created without. Once Gabriel meets Melissa and realizes he has feelings for her, the story intensifies. There are multiple antagonists, action scenes and romantic moments peppered throughout each book. The series has been labeled as paranormal romance, but we’re not certain that is an accurate categorization. It is more like a romantic-science fiction hybrid. One of our readers quipped that the Dark Creations series is like Twilight melding with a Dean Koontz novel minus the vampires and werewolves. She meant it as a compliment, and we appreciated it!

As for works in progress, we just released Dark Creations: The Hunted on July 28, 2012. We have another book in the making that should be released by the end of this year.

3.       What would you say your stories have in common? Principles, beliefs, situations, etc. What do you want readers to take from your creations?
Our books are part of a series, so there is a unifying element in each. The plot continues to develop, as do the characters and relationships between the characters. We really hope our readers walk away from our books with a sense of confidence in the ability of relationships to transcend differences, to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
4.       Writing is a process, a journey. What other process(es) move(s) you?
The processes of how bonds are formed are fascinating and moving. Whether it is the bond between spouses, parents and children, friends, pets, all bonds involve multiple processes. Relationships are complex in so many ways, yet simplistic at the same time in that at the core of each intricate process, trust has to be present. A crying baby learns to trust based upon the response his cries receive from his caregiver. That response forms the foundation of future attachments, whether they will be strong healthy bonds or ambivalent ones. A process as complex as that is answered with a simple act: the caregiver responding to the crying child. Trust is established (or not). All processes seem to share that common element. Even as writers, we need to trust that our instincts are correct, and that our story needs to be told, that we will be able to forge a relationship through our characters and plots with our readers. The development of relationships, the course of action it takes, is a remarkable phenomenon.
Very wise observation. I agree wholeheartedly. As a student of psychology, I believe trust in relationships is at the core of many things, too.
5.       What time-management/organizational tips do you suggest?
We write whenever opportunity presents itself! We are busy parents of three daughters. Time management and organization are great in theory, but the reality is, we put our children first. If one of them gets sick, or has a playdate or swim lessons, or anything, that takes precedence over writing. The way we see it, we can stay up late if need be. Sleep can be sacrificed. The writing will get done. But spending time as a family, there are no do-overs for that.
Sounds like you have your priorities in order J
6.       I don’t watch much television, but I can definitely while away the hours online. Marketing/publicity/social media are big parts of any author’s life. Any tips or favorite tools?
Twitter, Facebook and World Literary Café are all great networks for authors promoting their work. Each offers a unique experience, but at the same time shares a sense of unity and reciprocity. They all provide a team-like setting. On Facebook, friends are already closely allied with their respective subscriber so there is a sense of intimacy and connection. On Twitter, authors invariably link with one another and form friendships. And the World Literary Café boasts Tweet Teams where authors join actual teams and tweet about each other’s work. These systems let authors–particularly Indie authors–know that they’re not alone, that no one is competing against them, that we are all just trying to share what we love.
Apart from Twitter, Facebook, and World Literary Cafe, Serenity Editing software is an amazing editing tool that we highly recommend to writers, students, teachers, everyone.
Thanks for the suggestion, Jenny and Chris! I looked Serenity Editing up, and it’s $55-$75 in the U.S. for word documents. Here’s the link if anyone else is interested : http://www.serenity-software.com/
I’ve been extremely happy with www.worldliterarycafe.com.  Grateful Melissa Foster found me on twitter.

7.       What are some of your favorite resources for authors?
We always have a thesaurus and dictionary on hand when we write (both the online kind and the good old-fashioned paperback kind.) We also have The Smashwords Style Guide by Mark Coker sitting on our desk. It is a vital resource for Indie authors who format their own e-books.
8.       What do you look for in a good/great book?
A great book has to have a compelling storyline, likeable characters, dialogue that is realistic and relevant to the time period/setting of the piece and is a pleasure to read. If we stop reading a book or are hesitant to resume reading it for any reason, there’s a problem. We read most genres, but are partial to science fiction and paranormal romances. Our favorites are always ones with relatable characters we can support, authentic dialogue and a strong plot.

Thank you again for visiting with me today! I encourage my readers to visit and say hello to you in your many homes around the world wide web.
